City/County All-Star players savor final high school football game in Fresno
Clovis East wide receiver Donyell Booker Jr. said playing in the 71st City/County All-Star football game was everything he had hoped for.
Prior to Friday’s game at Koligian Stadium, Booker said getting to know new teammates was fun.
“Meeting new people every day,” he said. “Just getting a bond with people I’ve never seen before. It’s different personalities. Like some people you know, but they’re brothers.”
Booker’s County’s team defeated City 37-14 for their third straight victory in the annual all-star game in Fresno.
The game started when the Coalinga connection of Noah Tasi found Dylan Teixeira for a 10-yard touchdown in the first quarter.
“We’ve been playing with each other since seventh or eighth grade,” Teixeira said after the TD. “That was pretty special. We’re going to cherish that for the rest of our lives.”
The County got even when quarterback Justin Brewington of Hoover scored on a 70-yard touchdown run.
“I saw (DE) crash and the moment when I saw the DE crash, it was a rap,” he said. “I’m taking it to the house.”
While there were other touchdowns by other players, it was about having fun out there one last time as high school players.
While some players will hang up their cleats and look to their next phase of career, there are also others who will continue their football careers at the next level.
City running back Jackson Cinfel of Clovis North and David Bell of San Joaquin Memorial plan to play at Fresno City College next season.
Both shared what it was like to play one final time as a high school player and sharing the field with teammates.
“I get to play with some new athletes that I’ve never played with before,” said Cinfel, who will be joined by his brother, Ross, at Fresno City. “It’s a new experience with these coaching staff. It’s been a wonderful high school season and I’m ready to move on to college.”
Said Bell: “To be out here and play another game because high school ... it’s over,” Bell said. “You go to the next level or you don’t. It’s just good to be out here.”
Quarterback Noah Tasi of Coalinga was named Most Valuable Player for County and Ross Cinfel of Clovis North was named MVP for the City.
Tasi will continue to play football at College of the Sequoias, along with Jerod “Bubba” Smith, who scored on a touchdown run.
