High school girls lacrosse competition has been going on in the Fresno area for over 10 years.

In each game, the competitiveness is much like what you see on the East Coast, where badminton holds a prominent spot across the high school sports landscape.

Edison High coach Jamie Vargas hopes one day that can happen in the Central Section — and he’s inviting teams to join other Fresno Unified schools in competition.

Tuesday’s championship game between Edison and San Joaquin Memorial signaled the end of the season, and it came down to the final seconds.

The Panthers scored with seconds remaining to cut the Tigers’ lead to 10-9, but Edison withstood a late rally to win the title game as the Tigers ran onto the field at McLane Stadium and celebrated.

“It’s a big win for us,” Vargas said. “They knew the situation and they got the job done at the end. They’ve been working so hard and I’m just proud of them.”

Teams besides Edison and Memorial competing in Fresno Unified League include Sunnyside, Sanger, Hoover, Roosevelt, Garces and Bullard.

Vargas is inviting teams to join the league in hopes of expanding. Garces played for the first time this season.

“I hope to make it something big in the valley,” he said. “Any schools out there that need help starting a program, getting the program off the ground, I’m more than willing to help.”
