Clovis North wins first section title in school history, plus other volleyball champions

At long last for the Clovis North girls volleyball team.

The fourth-seeded Broncos are the Central Section Division I champions after knocking off No. 3 Clovis West 25-14, 25-17, 25-23 Thursday night, for the first time in school history.

“I think it’s pretty special,” Clovis North coach Lauren Winslow said. “I’m super proud of these girls, and it’s also really cool that I get to be back in my home gym from high school and earn another section championship.”

Winslow was referring to 2008 when she led Clovis West to its first section title and was named Co-Player of the Year. She went on to play in college at Fresno State and Fresno Pacific, and shared that experience and knowledge while guiding the Broncos to the section title this season.

It was no surprise that the Broncos made a run in the playoffs despite finishing third in the Tri-River Athletic Conference behind Clovis and Clovis West.

Clovis North’s playoff run included taking out No. 5 Liberty-Bakersfield and top seed San Luis Obispo.

“We worked so hard the whole season,” Ava Rogers said. “It’s so exciting we finally got (after we were so close) my freshman year. It all paid off. It feels good to finally win the (title). We got it done. We worked so hard for it.”

Clovis West had beaten Clovis North in four sets in 2021.

Not this time.

Clovis North now waits to find out this weekend where it’ll be seeded in the regional championships.

“We’re excited to see what the seeding looks like on Sunday,” Winslow said. “We’re playing really well and this is when you want to be your best volleyball.”

Other section champions: Central Valley Christian (D-II), Bullard (D-III), Fresno Christian (D-IV), California City (D-V) and Woodlake (D-VI).
