High school softball playoffs: No. 1 seed falls in the quarterfinals. Scores, schedule

No. 8 Stockdale High pulled off an 8-7 upset over No. 1 Clovis North in nine innings in the Central Section softball Division I playoffs.

And the Mustangs did it in impressive fashion off Broncos star pitcher Ryan Maddox, the two-time Bee Player of the Year.

The Broncos led 4-0 before the Mustangs rallied with three runs in the sixth inning and one in the seventh inning.

Stockdale tacked on four runs in the ninth inning for an 8-4 lead.

Clovis North’s bottom-of-the-ninth rally came up short.

Maddox, a senior, gave up 10 hits, eight runs (two earned) and one walk and had 10 strikeouts. She’ll be headed to University of Arizona.

Clovis North (24-2-1) appeared to be a juggernaut after beating No. 3 Clovis 13-0 on May 55. But the Broncos stumbled from there, seeing their unbeaten record come to an end in a 2-1 loss to Central last week, finishing the Tri-River Athletic Conference season with a 7-6 win over Buchanan on May 12 and then falling to Stockdale.

Preview, predictions

Division I: Clovis North is the clear favorite to win the title, but not before being challenged by its TRAC rivals. No. 3 Clovis is the defending champion. Predicted champion: Clovis North

Division II: St. Joseph gets the top billing in this division. Tulare Union is the second seed. There are plenty of tough matchups to go around. Predicted champion: Tulare Union

Division III: Fowler is the top seed and opens against new school No. 16 Sanger West. The Redcats come into the game winners of 10 straight. Bakersfield Christian is the No. 2 seed. It’s likely Fowler will be challenged by No. 5 Liberty-Madera Ranchos since they’ve played this season and split, decided by one run. Predicted champion: Fowler

Division IV: Orange Cove has been looking good all season and was rewarded with the top seed. Immanuel is the No. 2 seed. The Titans have won 15 games straight and won the section title last season. Predicted champion: Orange Cove

Division V: Woodlake is the top seed and faces No. 16 Fresno in the opener. No. 2 Boron hosts No. 15 North. Washington Union is the No. 3 seed. Predicted champion: Woodlake

Division VI: Very tough decision to call here. Predicted champion: No. 6 Sierra
