Clovis North sees its first softball loss. How Central scored its runs to pull off win

Central High handed Clovis North its first softball loss this season, beating the Broncos 2-1 in a Tri-River Athletic Conference game on Tuesday.

The Bee’s second-ranked Grizzlies (22-5, 6-3 TRAC) scored their only runs off Broncos pitcher Emma Blea in the first inning on a bases-loaded walk and a hit batsman.

Despite the loss for No. 1 Clovis North, the Broncos (23-1-1, 8-1) figure to be the top seed in the Central Section Division I playoffs that start next week.

The Grizzlies made a case to be the No. 2 seed after their win.

Central coach Scott Gorton had a message for his team.

”We have to keep grinding,” he said. “That team that we were playing today is one of the best teams around in recent memory in the section. ... Our pitching really stepped up today.

“Our pitching has carried us all year.”

Mia Nishikawa came in relief in the seventh inning and struck out two to earn the save. Kaia Galaviz got the win.
