How a TRAC prep girls soccer showdown was decided between Buchanan and Clovis North

Clovis North grabbed a share of the Tri-River Athletic Conference high school girls soccer title with Buchanan by beating the Bears 1-0 Thursday.

It is probably not the last time the teams will meet this season.

Clovis North sophomore Hannah Pierce scored in the 18th minute off a set piece on a corner kick to lift the Broncos.

“We need this victory,” said Clovis North coach Nick Pappanduros, who picked up his 400th career win, according to Central Section historian Bob Barnett. “The girls really wanted it today. We’re a thorn in each other’s side,” he said. “We knew we had to keep the pressure on them. Getting that goal on the set piece was big for us. Set the tone for us.”

The win snapped the Broncos’ four-game losing streak to the Bears dating back to last season.

Pappanduros said it’s always “an intense battle” going up against Buchanan and it wouldn’t surprise him if the teams meet up again sometime in the Central Section playoffs.

Sure enough, Clovis North is seeded No. 2 and Buchanan No. 3 in Division I, putting them on a semifinal collision course.

Boys soccer: Clovis North still undefeated

Clovis North is headed to the section playoffs undefeated and top-seeded after a 3-0 victory over Buchanan.

The Broncos (21-0-1, 10-0 TRAC) only allowed one goal against in 10 conference matches.

Freshman Nixon Hansen scored in the ninth minute and senior Mihran Semerdzhyan scored in the 46th and 50th minutes.

Clovis North (21-0-1, 10-0 TRAC) will be the top-seed when the Division I playoffs start next week.
