High school football Week 6: Showdown one-sided, an upset and a huge rushing game

Clovis East left no doubt in Friday’s prep football showdown with Kerman at Lamonica Stadium.

After trailing 7-0, The Bee’s eighth-ranked Timberwolves reeled off 24 unanswered points to pull away from the 24th-ranked Lions in a 43-14 victory.

Running back Lamaj Travis scored four touchdowns including two in the third quarter on an 80-yard run and a 53-yard run.

Clovis East was the only Tri-River Athletic Conference team in action in Week 6 and enters TRAC play with a 5-0 record. The Timberwolves will face No. 12 Clovis North to open the TRAC next Friday.

Kerman’s 4-0 start included wins over Madera and Sunnyside but now the Lions go from Clovis East to playing No. 5 Central Valley Christian and No. 7 Kingsburg to open their Tri-County Conference/Kings Canyon League schedule.

Mt. Whitney 20, No. 15 Reedley 13

The Pirates suffered their first loss of the season in an upset at Visalia’s Mineral King Bowl.

Reedley trailed 14-0 in the first half before cutting it to 14-13 after a Logan Moreno touchdown run.

But the Pioneers extended the lead and capped the scoring on Kenneth Furbash’s 2-yard reception from Dominic Pineda in the fourth quarter.

Michael Sanchez led the way for Mt. Whitney with two rushing touchdowns.

No. 7 Kingsburg 49, Tulare Union 28

Ethan Winslow passed for three touchdowns and Connor McFall had two touchdown receptions in the win for the Vikings.

Kingsburg scored 28 unanswered points for a 35-13 lead.

Trace Jackson scored on two runs during that span. He finished with 17 carries for 123 yards.

North Yosemite League

The newly recast eight-team NYL has two leaders after two weeks.

Sunnyside and Torres are both 2-0. Fresno, Hoover, McLane and Madera South are all 1-1.

Game balls

Jaime Arredondo, Strathmore: Seven carries for 141 yards and two touchdowns in the Spartans’ 49-0 win over Farmersville.

Andrew Camarillo, Orosi: Junior RB had 29 carries for 387 yards and six touchdowns in the Cardinals’ 49-21 win over Lindsay.

Jacob Poole, Strathmore: Nine carries for 172 yards and two touchdowns, helping the Spartans to a 49-0 victory over Farmersville.

AJ Reynoso, Tranquillity: One touchdown pass and ran for two scores in the Tigers’ 26-7 victory over Minarets.

Michael Sanchez, Mt. Whitney: Two touchdowns to help the Pioneers to a 20-13 upset win over Reedley.

Logan Stotts, Fresno Christian: Passed for four touchdowns in the Eagles’ 48-14 victory over Riverdale Christian.

Lamaj Travis, Clovis East: Four touchdown runs in the Timberwolves’ 43-14 win over Kerman.

Tanner Wilson, Sunnyside: Passed for two touchdowns and converted two two-point conversions in a 16-7 win over Roosevelt.

Will Henderson, Immanuel: Three rushing touchdowns propelled the Eagles to a 28-7 win over Mendota.

Bee’s predictions

In Week 6, The Bee went 4-1 picking wins by Clovis East, Kingsburg, Porterville and Torres but missing Mt. Whitney’s win over Reedley.

The Bee is 21-9 for the season.
