A perfect season is no longer on the table for the Clovis North softball team.

Buchanan had a strong performance by Christal Lopez, who pitched a five-hitter and struck out seven in 10 innings to help the Bears hold on for a 1-0 win over Clovis North.

Thimir Bracamontes drove in the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th inning.

The Broncos, however, remain The Bee’s top-ranked team, ahead of No. 2 Clovis and No. 3 Buchanan.

The Bears later lost to Clovis East 2-1. The Timberwolves jumped eight spots to No. 18 after the impressive win.

Some teams moved up one spot, and others moved back. Check out The Bee’s latest rankings below and how they fared last week.

Around the horn

Clovis North holds a one-game lead over Buchanan and Clovis in the Tri-River Athletic Conference with four games remaining. The Broncos face Clovis East and Clovis this week, followed by Central and Buchanan next week.

No. 16 Madera has a one-game lead over No. 5 Bullard with four games remaining in the County/Metro Athletic Conference. Both teams will meet in the season finale May 13 in Madera.

The Coyotes also celebrated coach Judy Shaubach’s 700th career win. She is the 11th in state history to reach the milestone, according to the Cal-Hi Sports record book. In the Central Section, Shaubach joins Mike D’Amato of Independence and Mike Noel of Clovis with at least 700 wins, historian Bob Barnett said.

Reedley leads the North Yosemite League by one game over Sunnyside. Those teams face each other May 10 at Sunnyside.
