Fresno-area prep baseball: Key wins in own tournament land new team in The Bee’s Top 25

Fowler High had notable wins in its own baseball tournament last week.

The Redcats defeated The Bee’s ranked teams Monache 10-0 and Kingsburg 8-7 on a walk-off hit by Jerod Smith.

Fowler gets into The Bee’s Central Section rankings at No. 25 with a 10-9 record. Fowler started the season 3-7.

Kingsburg dropped to No. 20 while Monache is now No. 23.

The rest of the rankings remain the same, led off by The Bee’s top-ranked Buchanan, which finished the Fresno Easter Classic at 4-0.

Around the horn

Sierra Pacific senior Ryan Cronk led the Golden Bears to a 25-3 victory over Cesar Chavez when he drove in seven runs and scored five times.

Kerman sophomore Adam Delgado led the way for the Lions last week at the Selma Kiwanis Tournament. He drove in five runs and pitched a six-hitter in a 4-2 win over El Capitan. He was named the tournament’s most valuable player to help the Lions remain undefeated at 20-0.

San Joaquin Memorial junior Charlie Monterrosa was named most valuable player of the Fresno Easter Classic after going 2 for 3 in a 4-2 victory over Central. Teammate Max Mendes pitched five innings and gave up only three hits and struck out four to pick up the win. He was named the tournament’s most outstanding pitcher.

Dos Palos got two no-hitters. Junior Will Montemurro struck out five in five innings at the Selma Kiwanis Tournament, and Derek Van Allman had nine strikeouts in a 14-1 victory over Selma.

Athlete of the Week winner

Zack Jones of Kings Christian baseball won The Bee’s boys Athlete of the Week poll for April 4-9.

He received 26,057 of the votes (57%) as he finished ahead of Ryan Cronk of Sierra Pacific baseball who tallied 19,592 votes (43%).

The sophomore pitched a no-hitter with no walks and had 11 strikeouts in a 13-0 win over Alpaugh. He also had two RBI and a walk.

An error prevented a perfect game.
