Clovis West eliminated in boys, girls basketball. But other locals advance to regional final

The Clovis West High boys basketball team’s season came to an an end Saturday after a 48-44 loss to Modesto Christian in the CIF Northern California Open Division regional semifinal game.

The No. 2-seed Golden Eagles fell behind 23-8 in the second quarter and trailed by 19 points at halftime.

The Eagles had been successful in rallying from big deficits this postseason.

And on Saturday, Clovis West managed to fight back to reduce the third-seeded Crusaders’ lead to 43-41 in the fourth quarter.

But Modesto Christian answered with a late-game 3-pointer that put the game away for good.

In addition, the Golden Eagles (31-2) had their chances to regain the lead but shot just 9 for 23 at the free-throw line.

In other boys basketball games:

No. 13 Clovis North 64, No. 1 Sacred Heart Prep-Atherton 58: The Broncos built a 12-point halftime lead and held on for the upset victory. Clovis North’s big lead dwindled to three points at the end of the third quarter and the game was close throughout the fourth quarter before the Broncos made five free throws down the stretch to close out the game. The Broncos will next face No. 3 St. Ignatius at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

No. 11 Bullard 60, No. 2 Oakland 59: Tyric Herrod made a basket with 10 seconds left to give the Knights the win to advance to the NorCal Division III regional championship. Bullard will face No. 1 Pleasant Valley.

Clovis West girls drop game

No. 2 Archbishop Mitty-San Jose eliminated No. 3 Clovis West with a 53-45 victory.

The Monarchs went on a an 8-0 run in the third quarter to pull away from the visiting Golden Eagles.

Earlier in the third quarter, Clovis West tied the game 25-25 on Athena Tomlinson’s basket.

That was the last time the Golden Eagles were tied with Archbishop Mitty who then went on the run.

No. 5 San Joaquin Memorial 57, No. 8 Lincoln 45: The Panthers will host the NorCal Division II regional championship game. The semifinal was close throughout before Memorial outscored Lincoln 9-0 for a 41-34 lead and held on. The Panthers will host No. 10 Antelope with the winner advancing to the state championship at the Golden 1 Center in Sacramento at 2 p.m. March 12.

No. 1 Lincoln 38, No. 12 Central 35: A close game throughout, but it was the Zebras who came out on top, ending the Grizzlies’ season in a NorCal D-III game.

No. 3 Porterville 62, No. 15 Orcutt Academy 37: In another D-III game, but in SoCal, the Panthers proved to be too much for the Spartants. Porterville next face top-seed La Salle at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
