Buchanan girls soccer team’s run at regional championship comes down to penalty kicks
It came down to penalty kicks for the Buchanan High and Oak Ridge girls soccer teams.
In the end, the Trojans came away with 6-4 win on penalty kicks Saturday over the Bears for the CIF Northern California Division I championship.
The Bears were eyeing their second regional title after winning the Southern California Division II title last season.
It looked good for Buchanan when Ciara Wilson scored the first goal when she scored off a corner kick with a left kick past the goalkeeper in the first half.
She added her second goal when she got a rebound off an Oak Ridge player and dribbled past players and kicked the ball to the left of the net for the clinching goal.
But Oak Ridge didn’t go away easily. The Trojans scored twice, including a penalty kick that sent the game to overtime.
The Bears were consistent all season, starting at 6-0 before dropping back-to-back matches to Cathedral Catholic-San Diego and Villa Park.
Buchanan rebounded and went on another win streak to close out the season 20-3-1 that included a Tri-River Athletic Conference title.
