Bee’s Best: The 1-2 finish of the latest boys and girls Athlete of the Week poll was close

Kaydence Cortez-Garcia of Clovis West soccer is the winner of The Fresno Bee’s Athlete of the Week for Nov. 15-20.

And it was a very close race.

Cortez-Garcia picked up 29,776 votes (36%) and barely got by Athena Tomlinson of Fresno Christian who received 28,346 votes (35%).

Coming in third was Sydney Sundgren of Buchanan cross country after getting 10,326 votes (13%).

Thirty-one athletes were nominated for The Bee’s Athlete of the Week.

The nominees were from basketball, cross country, soccer and wrestling.

Past winners: Grace Van Der Kooi of Central Valley Christian volleyball, Katelyn Goforth of Kerman volleyball, Andrew Gray of Madera water polo, Krisalynn Turman of Caruthers volleyball, Margaret Arambula of Mission Oak volleyball, Kristen Landen of Clovis West volleyball, Gabby Russell of Clovis West volleyball, Goforth again, Marissa Mendrin of Kerman volleyball, Susie Phillips of Central Valley Christian golf, Gianna Mastro of Clovis West tennis and Evan Torres of Parlier cross country.

The poll closed at noon Saturday.
