Preps: Teams playing in first baseball and softball regionals; City/County football recap

The Inaugural California Interscholastic Federation Southern California baseball and softball regionals will begin Tuesday and seven teams in the Fresno-area are aiming for regional titles.

Area baseball teams playing in the regionals are Buchanan, Madera and Washington Union.

Softball teams from the area include Clovis, Selma, Fowler and Tulare Union.

The regional playoffs will continue Thursday with the regional championship set for June 26.

Here are the matchups:

Baseball

Division I — No. 8 Bishop Amat at No. 1 Buchanan, 4 p.m.

Division II — No. 6 Camarillo at No. 3 Madera, 4 p.m.

Division V-A — No. 1 Washington Union vs. No. 4 Orange Glen/No. 5 Bravo winner, 4 p.m. June 24

Softball

Division I — No. 7 Granada Hills Charter at No. 2 Clovis, 4 p.m.

Division II — No. 5 Selma vs. No. 4 Rosary Academy (at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in La Habra), 4 p.m.

Division III — No. 6 Orange Vista at No. 3 Fowler, 6 p.m.; No. 7 Alverno Heights Academy at No. 2 Tulare Union, 4 p.m.

City/County All-Star Football game recap

The 67th City/County All-Star game concluded with the County rolling past City 35-0 at Tom Flores Stadium in Sanger on Friday.

Central’s D.J. Stevenson, named the County’s Most Valuable Player, had a touchdown run and threw a 28-yard touchdown to Austin Arroyo of Buchanan.

Alberto Torres of Madera South was named City’s MVP. He had an interception.

It was the eighth shutout since the All-Star game started in 1955.

The City won the last game played in 2019. The 2020 All-Star game was canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Career basketball totals for Anderson and Soto

Cole Anderson finished his Clovis West basketball career with 2,733 points — second-best in section history, according to historian Bob Barnett.

Anderson finished with 464 3-pointers for third-most in state history, Barnett said.

Strathmore star Jazmine Soto finished her career by scoring 3,331 points in 122 games, tied for sixth-best in state history, according to Cal-Hi Sports Record Book.

Soto led the section in scoring with 30.9 points per game for the third consecutive year, tying Jackie White to accomplish that feat in section history, Barnett said.

Athlete of the Week winners

Amneet Basra of Fowler basketball and Avery Foster of Clovis golf are The Bee’s Athlete of the Week winners for June 7-12.

Basra finished with 53.8% of the vote ahead of Ayden Merrihew of Clovis track and field with 40.8%. Austin Beno of El Diamante had 2.2% Others: Christopher Caudillo of Clovis track and field (0.8%), Jake Bettencourt of Buchanan golf (0.4%), Sky Collins of Buchanan baseball (0.4%), Liam Gair of Exeter track and field (0.3%), Bohdi Gonsalves of Kingsburg track and field (0.2%) and Will Gagnon of Reedley baseball (0.1%).

Foster’s 49.2% led the girls. Naleya Bridges of Clovis North softball came in second with 26.9% and Isa Montes of Clovis West golf came in third with 17.9%. Soto had 4.3%. and Katelyn Edmundson of Liberty-Madera Ranchos softball had 1.1%.
