No doubt about it. Sanger dominates for Northern California regional soccer title

After a couple close games to get there, the Sanger High boys soccer team broke loose to win the school’s first regional championship.

The third-seeded Apaches rolled to a 4-0 victory over No. 5 Redwood-Larkspur in California Interscholastic Federation Northern California Division II.

“Satisfaction, pride and gratitude,” Sanger coach Alex Gutierrez said. “I’m very happy to have been a part of this to see the community support. These boys deserved all the success. They’ve worked so hard all year long starting back in September.”

An upset win Thursday gave Sanger a surprise home game for Saturday’s final, and a proud community packed the home side at Tom Flores Stadium.

Sanger’s 24-3-5 season included a County/Metro Athletic Conference title, then a 4-1 victory over Dinuba for the Central Section Division II championship.

The Apaches advanced to the regional championship with wins over No. 6 Central Valley-Ceres on penalty kicks and No. 2 Las Lomas-Walnut Creek 1-0.

“The (regional) championship is the final chapter to the story for the season,” Gutierrez said. “But really this title started three years ago, and the seniors on the team are the ones who helped write this book.”
