Organizers of the annual Fresno City/County All-Star Volleyball Match switched up the format for 2017. Rather than a strict City vs. County breakdown, teams were chosen on a North and South geographical basis to balance the teams.

The result? Fresno-South, including players from Central Section Division I champ Buchanan and runner-up Clovis, still defeated Fresno-North in straight sets 25-15, 25-22, 25-19 on Wednesday night at Fresno State’s South Gym..

Richard Lake III, whose Cougars bounced back from their section final loss to win the Southern California Regional championship, had son Trey setting for power-hitting Clovis teammates Akash Dhothar and Max Ogas, who had nine kills each. Sanger’s Izaiah Cole had five kills in the win, according to the recap provided by Fresno State men’s club coach Brian Tsukimura.

A couple of key stats favoring the South: nine blocks and seven service aces.

The North, coached by Steve Guglielmana and Nate Perez (Madera South), were led by the Stallions’ Carlos Hernandez (eight kills) and Madera’s Devonte Orlando (seven). Clovis West’s Harrison Molter was 5 for 5, and Madera South’s Javier Gil had four kills and five aces.
