New Fresno State men’s basketball coach says he hopes to fill Save Mart Center
Fresno State opened the basketball season with a couple easy warmups in exhibitions Friday night at the Save Mart Center.
The Bulldogs men beat Humboldt State 78-50. The Bulldogs women routed Cal State Dominguez Hills 102-49. Both opponents are in NCAA Division II.
All nine Fresno State men scored with four in double figures: New Williams 15, Braxton Huggins 13, Deshon Taylor 12 and Chrsitian Gray 11. Taylor is a preseason All-Mountain West Conference pick, while the other three are transfers: Williams (from Auburn), Huggins (from New Mexico State) and Gray (Salt Lake Community College).
Gray and another newcomer, Brazilian center Lazaro Rojas, each had seven rebounds.
Forward Nate Grimes, one of only three returning players to average at least 12 minutes per game, was held out while an eligibility question is sorted out.
The announced crowd Friday night was 4,795.
The men are back at the Save Mart Center on Tuesday night for the regular-season opener against Alaska-Anchorage. Game time is 7 p.m.
Fresno State won’t be back after that until Nov. 28 against Pacific. In the meantime, the Bulldogs play Nov. 15 at TCU and then Thanksgiving week at the Wooden Legacy, three games in Fullerton starting with a Thanksgiving Day matchup against Northwestern.
In the women’s game, just eight saw action for Fresno State. Aly Gamez, Maddi Utti and Bree Delaney each scored 20, Kristina Cavey 17 with a team-high 10 rebounds and Jordanna Porter 10 with a team-high five assists. The Bulldogs shot 38 of 68 from the field and had 27 assists.
Fresno State opens the regular season Tuesday night at Northern Arizona. The home opener is Nov. 14 against Cal Poly.
