KC Chiefs and ex-Central High star Xavier Worthy back in Fresno for youth football camp

Giving back to the Fresno community was always the forefront for Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Xavier Worthy, former star of Central East.

It has always been that way since he was child, figuring at some point if he turns pro he would return to his roots after playing for Edison Pop Warner that shaped his early football journey.

He was back at Edison for his free football camp where 400 kids got to focus on skills, mentorship and confidence building.

“You never know who’s going to be the next me or who needs those words of encouragement,” Worthy said. “That spark for them to go out.”

Edison High coaches helped out, including Tigers coach Johnny Sears. Even former Fresno State standout Mac Dalena, now with the Chiefs, arrived to help out.

“There are a lot of Fresno guys coming out right now and it’s just important for us to come back and build that foundation for the kids and show them like OK, you can make it. We all came from the same spot. Just give them motivation. It’s important to give back to where my roots came from.”

Here are the other notables:

Worthy was asked what separates Kansas City from Fresno: “Kansas City, work. Fresno, home.”

On the relationship with his mom, Niki: “My mom’s like my best friend. To have her around is like a bonus. It’s cool to have her around.”

On his mom establishing the name Worthy 1’s Foundation: “We’ve been talking about the foundation like back and forth, like we should do this. We’re going to have a lot of events going in Georgetown, Texas next year for a golf event.”
