Fresno boxer’s pro debut on hold after he tests positive for COVID-19

Marc Castro’s pro boxing debut has been put on hold after he announced Thursday morning he has tested positive for the coronavirus.

Castro, 20, was to face Raul Corona (2-3, 0 KOs) in a four-round featherweight bout in Tulsa, Okla.

But that is not happening, the Fresno native informed his followers on Twitter.

“I don’t even know where to begin. I tested negative before leaving Cali. I was ready but my fight has been cancelled due to me testing positive for Covid-19. I’m sorry to all my supporters, it was supposed to be memorable night for all of us since it was my pro debut. It wasn’t Gods plan, but we will get through this together,” Castro said.

Matchroom Boxing announced that Castro’s father-trainer, Tony, also tested positive.

“We are all extremely disappointed for Marc that his debut has been postponed following his positive test for COVID-19,” Matchroom’s chief medical officer Dr. Rod Ballelos said in a press release.

“Marc and his father will now be under strict quarantine and plans are being made to ensure the safety of everyone still involved in the event, as well as to not expose the community and contribute to this already devastating pandemic.”

Earlier this year, Castro signed with Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing after a strong amateur career.

Castro went 177-7 and won 17 national championships and two world titles. In national and international bouts, he went 48-2.
