A big surprise in state basketball seeds sends an Open Division champion on the road
A day after San Joaquin Memorial High won the Central Section Open Division boys basketball championship over Clovis West, the Panthers were given the No. 13 seed in the CIF Northern California Division I regional playoffs.
That means Memorial will hit the road to face No. 4 De La Salle-Concord on Tuesday.
And Clovis West?
The Golden Eagles are the eighth seed in D-I and will host No. 9 Vanden-Fairfield.
Fans were surprised by the seeds.
The Panthers hit the road carrying a 14-game winning streak.
Divisions I-V play three rounds this week on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Regional finals are March 10 and state finals in all divisions are March 13-14 at the Golden 1 Center in Sacramento.
Clovis West girls in Open Division
No. 3 Clovis West will visit No. 2 St. Joseph Notre Dame-Alameda in a girls NorCal Open Division regional semifinal on Saturday.
Clovis North was placed in Division I in NorCal and seeded No. 3, giving the Broncos a Tuesday home game against No. 14 St. Ignatius-San Francisco.
Fresno Christian to host state game
The section-champion Fresno Christian boys are the No. 8 seed in D-V and will host No. 9 Calaveras-Sutter Creek on Tuesday.
Fowler, beaten by Fresno Christian in the section final, got the Southern California No. 6 seed and will host No. 11 Maywood Academy.
State champs to hit road
Caruthers, coming off a 60-58 victory over Sierra Pacific for the section D-IV title, is the No. 9 seed and will visit No. 8 Half Moon Bay in the NorCal bracket.
In another head-scratcher, section D-I semifinalist Hanford was placed in D-IV and got the NorCal No. 3 seed.
Soccer regionals
Nine Fresno-are teams are in this week’s Northern California soccer regionals; six are at home for Tuesday quarterfinals including girls D-I No. 1 Clovis North at 3 p.m. against Carondelet-Concord.
Clovis, section runner-up to Clovis North, is No. 2 in D-II.
And section boys D-I champ Central is No. 4 in D-I.
