What a game! Double-overtime decides section title between Fresno Christian and Fowler

Fresno Christian High boys basketball coach Jon Penberthy was trying to find the words to describe winning a Central Section boys basketball championship in double-overtime.

“Where do I start? We stuck together and were able to weather the storm.”

The Eagles started off double overtime with a 3-pointer by Bryson Graham and never looked back for a 76-73 victory over Fowler to win the Division V championship Friday afternoon at Selland Arena.

It is Fresno Christian’s first section title since 2012, section historian Bob Barnett said.

Fowler had a chance to win in regulation when Mitchell Uriarte was fouled attempting a 3-pointer with .4 seconds left.

He made 1 of 3 free throws and the game was tied 55-55.

In the first overtime, the Eagles led 64-61 after a 3-pointer by Graham.

But Fowler’s Japnaam Kahlon nailed a 3-pointer with 1.9 seconds left, and the game went into double overtime.

“I was like, ‘Second overtime? We got to do this again and hit some clutch free throws,” Fresno Christian’s Orion Tomlinson said. He made four free throws in double overtime and Tyus Parrish-Tillman made three.

Parrish-Tillman led the Eagles with 23 points despite chants of “overrated” thrown at him.

“I like listening to the crowd because they put me in a zone,” he said.

Amneet Barsa of Fowler was the leading scorer with 28 points.
