What has a Fresno boxer been doing since arriving in Las Vegas for his fight?
The focus Saturday night in Las Vegas is, of course, on Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Conor McGregor.
But there’s a fight on the undercard at T-Mobile Arena that central San Joaquin Valley boxing fans should pay particular attention to: Fresno’s Marcos Hernandez (9-1, 2 KOs) vs. Kevin Newman II (7-0-1, 3 KOs) in a scheduled six-round super middleweight bout. It’s Hernandez’s first fight in the weight division (163 pounds).
The undercard that includes Hernandez starts at 4 p.m.; his bout could be shown live on KMPH-26.1 before the pay-per-view starts at 6 p.m.
Hernandez and his team arrived in Las Vegas on Wednesday and “everyone is looking forward to the fight,” he said.
The “everyone” he’s referring to are fight fans who walked up to Hernandez at the MGM Grand Las Vegas and asked who he was.
“Wanting to take pictures when I tell them I’m fighting Saturday,” he said.
Hernandez said he is “focused on my job Saturday night. That’s what is important to me right now. I’m very happy to be able to perform and showcase my talent on a very big stage. I’ve trained hard and smart for this fight and I plan to come out victorious, while also showing I am a top-class fighter.”
