Wake up, pastor: Russia’s major attack on democracy is reason for concern
In reply to colleague Rev. Roger Minassian, the whiners are not much of an issue: Most Hillary Clinton supporters have moved on to widespread efforts to defend and extend existing social rights gained over recent decades. Biblically, these rights embody the heart of the Beatitudes.
His dismissal of the importance of the successful Vladimir Putin-directed massive Russian efforts to sow doubt about the validity of our electoral process and to shape the outcome of the election itself is divisive and disturbing. This is not a progressive vs. conservative issue.
Regardless of who won or why, the fact that Russia successfully interjected chaos and confusion into our sacred democratic process should be the overwhelming concern for all of us. This was a major attack on our nation’s noble experiment with democracy, historically a fundamental and radical departure from the governments of kings, queens, and dictators in order to establish a government of, for, and by the people.
While it is clear to many citizens today that we have much more work to do to reach that goal, we must all guard against those whose aim is to undermine our democratic ideals and weaken the processes to fulfill those ideals, particularly elections.
