It pays to keep Fresno Unified accountable

The Fresno Unified board recently voted to make schools “safe places” for undocumented students. While I applaud the board for this decision, I’m more proud of the hundreds of local residents who got loud and got results.

Youth, community leaders and many others packed the FUSD meeting room to make it clear that our students need to attend school with the confidence that they will be protected and supported. Perhaps the board would have voted for this resolution, even if no one showed up. Maybe. But I think the power of people and community ultimately made this decision.

Now we need to stay focused and make sure the board continues to work on behalf of all students. All of us – parents, families, students – need to continue to demand to be part of the process. We can’t stop now. We need to make sure the board does its job.
