The temperatures in Fresno swung wildly from the weekend moving into the work week.

On Saturday, the city recorded a high of 94 — nearly 15 degrees above the season’s norm.

On Monday, that number is expected to fall 10 degrees below the seasonal average, as a trough settles over the area.

By Tuesday, high temperatures will be 12 to 14 degrees below normal for this time of year across the region, according to the National Weather Service.

In its daily forecast discussion, the weather service on Monday predicted below-average temperatures into the weekend.

Rain and snow in forecast

The NWS is also predicting a slight chance of rain and snow in the Sierra Nevada, with thunderstorms possible Tuesday afternoon across the entire region north of Visalia. At that, less than .1 of an inch is predicted for most areas, including Fresno.

While the temperatures shouldn’t be affecting the snow melt in the mountain and foothills and Yosemite National Park reopened early than expected after closing due to fears of flooding, the weather service says that “areas of higher snow melt may occur” due to the effect of upcoming rain.

“This potential additional snow melt would increase runoff into local creeks and rivers, which increases the risk of flooding.”
