Fresno and Valley may see thunder, hail in storms. Next week will see quick temp spike

Fresno and the central San Joaquin Valley may see some thunderstorms going into the weekend, but temperatures are expected to swing up next week, according to forecasters.

The National Weather Service in Hanford will be monitoring for thunderstorms in the Valley beginning about noon Thursday and through about the same time Friday, according to meteorologist Andy Bollenbacher.

With thunderstorms comes a chance for brief heavy showers, winds up to 40 mph and half-inch hail, according to Bollenbacher.

“The further north, the more likely it is,” he said. “Thunderstorms can be spotty and it’s hard to predict where they’ll go.”

Those storms are more likely in Merced and Madera counties, and parts of Fresno, he said.

The highs this week have been in the high 60s and low 70s, and are expected to get up to the high 80s by Monday, forecasters say. They’ll come back down to a seasonal low 80s later next week.

The winter weather also this week comes with warnings for the mountains, where areas above 5,000 feet are looking at about 6 inches or more of snow through Friday, meteorologists say.

A cold front is passing through the area,” Bollenbacher said. “It’s bringing quite a bit (of precipitation) especially for April.”

The National Weather Service in Hanford will be monitoring for thunderstorms in the Valley beginning about noon Thursday, April, 21, 2022, and through about the same time Friday, according to meteorologist Andy Bollenbacher.
