Yosemite National Park planning road closure due to coming storms

Yosemite National Park will temporarily close Tioga Road due to coming storms.

The closure will begin at 6 p.m. Thursday, Yosemite officials announced, adding that “multiple storms are forecast” in the region through Monday.

Other Yosemite roads are still listed as open, except for the Mariposa Grove Road, which starts near the park’s south entrance and leads to the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias.

Snow is expected this week in the high Sierra, and rain at lower Sierra elevations, like Yosemite Valley. The coming storm system “could potentially be the strongest” seen in two years to impact the nearby Central Valley, the National Weather Service reported.

Yosemite’s Tioga Road briefly closed and reopened a couple other times in recent weeks.

The route that stretches over the Sierra Nevada to the Eastern Sierra is normally open to vehicles from late May or June until sometime in November. Last year, Tioga Road closed for the season on Nov. 5.

Yosemite’s Glacier Point Road will close in 2022 for road improvements, but “winter operations will remain open as usual,” with access to the Badger Pass Ski Area planned through March.

Reservations are no longer needed to enter Yosemite, what changed Oct. 1.

There is no overnight parking allowed on the road or adjacent parking lots along the Tioga Road and Glacier Point Road.

Yosemite officials said the Mariposa Grove Road remains temporarily closed due to icy conditions. When open, typically spring to fall, it’s only open to vehicles with disability placards. Others have to hike or cycle to the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias from the welcome center near the park’s south entrance.

Visitors can check Yosemite road conditions by calling 209-372-0200 or visiting nps.gov/yose.
