Local Election

How many Fresno County residents have voted in 2026 primary election so far?

Editor's Note: With Election Day one week away and many high-stakes races across Fresno County, the area’s vote count is on par with other recent primary elections so far.

As of Tuesday, the Fresno County Clerk’s office had received 49,238 ballots, according to county data.

Of those, 28,175 were mail-in ballots, and another 21,063 were dropped off at a drop box location.

“Based on these numbers so far, I expect a final turnout similar to our primaries since 2016,” Fresno County Registrar of Voters James Kus said. “Participation in primaries is often significantly lower than in general elections.”

Locally, there are four competitive races for seats on the Fresno City Council — Districts 1, 3, 5 and 7 — as well as two seats on the Fresno County Board of Supervisors — Districts 1 and 4 — and the big statewide ticket item to replace Gov. Gavin Newsom.

To secure a seat, a candidate must receive over 50% of the vote in local elections. If no one secures a majority of the vote, the top two candidates will advance to the November general election.

Of the 525,147 registered voters in Fresno County, 194,703 are registered Democrats, and 173,582 are registered Republicans, according to county data. Another 112,120 voters have no party preference listed.

Early vote-by-mail ballots were delivered in early May for the June 2 election. Statewide, only 9% of ballots mailed out have been returned just one week from Election Day.

Mailed ballots must be postmarked on or before Election Day and received by election offices within seven days.

Instead of mailing it in, voters can submit their ballot at a drop-off location or vote in-person at the polls from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Find your nearest polling place here.
