‘I wish Egan well.’ Treisman concedes Fresno judge’s race to former district attorney
Former District Attorney Elizabeth Egan appeared poised to capture a seat on the Fresno County Superior Court bench after her opponent conceded the race.
Egan, 60, won 63% of the votes in results announced late Tuesday. Her opponent, Douglas Treisman, 59, had 37% of the votes, according to the county Registrar of Voters office.
Egan surged to an early lead and never looked back.
Egan’s advantage stayed steady through several rounds of updates.
Treisman conceded to Egan late Tuesday, but Egan stopped short of declaring victory.
“We are looking good right now – the numbers are looking good,” she said.
Treisman wishes Egan well, concedes
Treisman, who was home with his wife on Tuesday night, was reached after the latest round of results were released.
“I’ll be conceding that I can’t win the election,” he said.
He said there’s a great sense of satisfaction in running for office, but there’s also a “sense of disappointment when you lose.”
“If you are not selected, well, then you move on, what else can you do?” he asked. “I wish Egan well.”
Treisman is a senior deputy district attorney who has extensive trial experience prosecuting a wide range of cases, including homicides, gang violence, sex offenders and career criminals.
Mims, Smittcamp on opposite sides
Egan worked in the DA’s office for nearly 20 years and served as its elected leader for 12 years, starting in 2002.
Egan was endorsed by Fresno County Sheriff Margaret Mims, as well as former sheriffs Steve Magarian and Richard Pierce. The former DA was also supported by former Fresno Mayor Alan Autry, former Fresno County Supervisor Henry R. Perea and retired state Supreme Court Justice Marvin Baxter.
Treisman was endorsed by Fresno County District Attorney Lisa Smittcamp, the Fresno Prosecutors’ Association and the District Attorney Investigators’ Association. Smittcamp beat Egan in the 2014 DA’s race.
Treisman was also backed by Fresno County Chief Deputy District Attorney Bob Whalen, who is also a Clovis councilman. Treisman was also supported by Fresno City Councilmembers Garry Bredefeld, Mike Karbassi and Miguel Arias.
Egan last month told The Bee her previous role as Fresno County’s DA placed her in a unique position to serve as a Fresno County Superior Court judge. Meanwhile, Treisman last month told The Bee his current role at the Fresno County DA’s Office, which focuses on ensuring correct implementation of the law and justice, qualified him to serve as a judge.
Egan and Treisman are running for the position that will become vacant with the retirement of Alan M. Simpson.
Gabriel Brickey is running unopposed to fill Fresno County Superior Court Judge Don Penner’s vacancy. Penner chose not to run for re-election.
