The Madera County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s help locating a missing woman connected to a man who was shot and killed by a deputy last week.

Sheriff Tyson Pogue released new details about the fatal June 19 shooting by a deputy responding to reports of a burglary in progress. Pogue identified the man killed as 42-year-old Gregory Simon Anguiano.

Pogue also revealed that Anguiano’s wife, Claudia Anguiano, has not been seen since June 15.

While deputies were responding initially to the burglary call, Pogue said, another caller reported that a man carrying a crowbar was charging toward a vehicle.

A deputy arrived in the area and contacted the suspect. During the encounter, investigators said the suspect became combative and took the deputy’s Taser. He then deployed the Taser against the deputy, striking her with both probes.

As the struggle continued, multiple residents called 911 to report that the deputy and suspect were fighting on the ground and that the suspect appeared to be attempting to take the deputy’s service weapon.

Pogue said several good Samaritans intervened and assisted the deputy during the confrontation.

The deputy shot Anguiano, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The California Department of Justice is investigating the shooting because Anguiano was not armed with a deadly weapon at the time of the incident. Pogue emphasized that the investigation is required under Assembly Bill 1506 and is a standard legal procedure, not an indication of wrongdoing by the deputy.

Detectives later located Anguiano’s Ford Escape west of Road 12 near an orchard and recovered a cellphone along Avenue 12.

Claudia Anguiano was last known to be in Whittier in Southern California.

According to Pogue, the couple had been living in Whittier while also maintaining a home in Fresno and were believed to be in the process of relocating between the two cities.

Detectives traced Gregory Anguiano’s movements in the days leading up to the shooting.

Deputies said he was seen at a Del Taco in Moreno Valley on June 18.

His vehicle later traveled through the Gilman Hot Springs area near Hemet around 8 p.m. before returning toward Whittier at approximately 12:30 a.m. the following morning.

Pogue said Claudia Anguiano had been arrested June 11 on suspicion of domestic violence involving Gregory Anguiano and remained in custody until her release on June 15.

Since her release, Pogue said Claudia Anguiano has not been seen, has not contacted her children and has not picked up her paycheck.

The sheriff’s office is asking anyone who may have seen Gregory or Claudia Anguiano, or who had contact with either of them, to come forward.

“Even the smallest detail may be important,” Pogue said.

Authorities identified the suspect killed in the deputy-involved shooting as 42-year-old Gregory Simon Anguiano. Claudia Anguiano is reported missing by deputies.
