A man was shot in the back Sunday after visiting a friend in Fresno.

Fresno Police Lt. Michael Pierce said officers responded at 8:20 p.m. to the 900 block of W. Griffith Way, where they found a man lying in the roadway with a gunshot wound.

He was taken to a local hospital and is in stable condition.

Pierce said the victim and his friend were sitting in a vehicle when two suspects wearing black clothing and masks approached them. A confrontation ensued, and one of the suspects allegedly fired a shot, striking the victim. The friend fought with the other suspect.

The suspects then got into the victim’s vehicle and fled the scene.

Later, California Highway Patrol officers spotted the stolen vehicle near Cesar Chavez Boulevard and Teilman Avenue and tried to pull it over, but the suspects drove off and officers lost sight of the vehicle, Pierce said.

The vehicle eventually crashed, and the suspects fled on foot.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 559-621-7000.
