A woman is in the hospital with life-threatening injuries after she was stabbed Sunday in Fresno, police said.

Officers responded at 10:10 p.m. at McKinley and West avenues and found the woman with a stab wound to her upper torso. She was taken to a local hospital to undergo surgery and was in critical condition.

According to the victim and witnesses, officers learned the woman was walking with friends in the area of Clinton and West avenues when they were approached by two women and three men. For unknown reasons, they began to fight with the women suspects, Fresno Police Lt. Marcus Gray II said.

During the fight, the victim was stabbed in her abdomen. The victim and her friends left the area and called for help.

Officers were looking for more witnesses and evidence, Gray said.
