An attempted robbery in Fresno late Friday afternoon resulted in shots fired by a civilian, police said.

Just before 5:30 p.m., officers responded to 7064 N. Cedar Ave., near Herndon Avenue, regarding a stolen vehicle with three people in it that had crashed into the front of the jewelry store, and the trio’s subsequent attempt to rob the store, Fresno Police Lt. Henry Garcia III said.

A civilian who works nearby and saw what was happening opened fire on the suspects.

Garcia III said another vehicle was also at the scene; the suspects got into that vehicle and fled north on Cedar.

Robbery detectives are investigating. It’s not known whether any of the suspects was hit by gunfire.
