A man is in the hospital Sunday after he was hit by gunfire in Fresno.

Officers responded to Belmont Avenue and First Street and found a man who was struck in the upper body outside of Smooth Smoke Shop around 7:15 p.m.

Fresno police Lt. Leslie Williams said the victim was shot at least once. He was taken to a local hospital where his status is unknown.

The suspect fled eastbound from the area, Williams said.

Police learned the victim and suspect had a prior interaction two days ago.

Williams said she watched the video that shows the victim and suspect outside at the time of the shooting.

Detectives are investigating the shooting.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 559-621-7000.
