A man tried shooting his ex in front of Fresno police late Wednesday afternoon, prompting an officer to fire back at him in a domestic violence dispute that continued to intensify.

Police said the incident started around 2:30 p.m. when a woman made a 9-11 call, stating that she was with her 3-year-old child in a car and that her ex was ramming his vehicle into her vehicle near the intersection of First Street and Shields Avenue.

The woman remained on the phone with dispatch while describing that she was attempting to flee from the man while driving southbound on Highway 41.

But the man, whose identity was not immediately released but is 31 years old, continued to chase after her and ram his Mercedes into her BMW amid freeway traffic, police said.

The woman eventually exited Jensen Avenue, where a Fresno police officer got involved.

The woman’s vehicle came to a stop.

The responding officer tried to drive his vehicle, which has its emergency lights flashing, between the woman and the man, and instructed the man to stop, according to Fresno police.

But the man continued to drive past police until he fired a shot at the woman’s vehicle.

“In front of the officer, the suspect put his arm out of the driver’s window and fired a round right into the victim’s vehicle,” Fresno Police Chief Mindy Casto said. “Feet in front of the sergeant. … A brazen act.

“He was clearly aware that law enforcement was here — and still chose to shoot the victim.”

Casto said the responding officer fired multiple shots at the man, who tried fleeing from police and struck several other vehicles while driving away.

Other officers eventually got involved to help stop and arrest the man.

Casto said the man complained of pain, but that it was unclear if he was struck by gunfire. She added that any injuries that he might’ve sustained were not significant. The man was identified by police on Friday as Martin Campos.

Police said he was not struck by gunfire but is receiving treatment at Community Regional Medical Center for other injuries.

The woman and the child were not physically injured in the incident.

And the officer who fired shots at the suspect was not injured, either, Casto said.

“Could have been a very chaotic scene,” Casto said. “In fact, it was. The sergeant brought a lot of calm to it and do what had to be done.

“It was very clear that the victim’s life was in danger. So it helped him to make good decisions how to keep her safe and keep that suspect from posing a danger from the rest of the public.”

Police said the gun that the man fired was recovered.

“It is a complete miracle that the victim was not struck or hurt seriously or killed based on the way the suspect pointed his gun directly at her through the window of the car and fired a shot at her,” Casto said.

Campos will be booked into the Fresno County jail on multiple charges, including two counts of attempted murder, three counts of assault with a deadly weapon, child endangerment, and several weapons violations.

Police said Campos has prior criminal convictions for narcotic related offenses.

This is the Fresno Police Department’s third officer-involved shooting this year. The department dealt with one in 2024.

In 2023, Fresno Police were involved in six officer-involved shootings in 2023 and seven in 2022.
