A man was killed Wednesday night in a hit-and-run collision in Fresno County.

The California Highway Patrol responded at 7:45 p.m. to Manning Avenue, west of Hansen Avenue, involving a Honda Accord that was traveling eastbound on Manning Avenue at a high rate of speed in Orange Cove.

CHP said the vehicle made an abrupt turn onto the right shoulder, colliding with multiple trees in an orange orchard before overturning.

The 36-year-old man, who was the right front passenger, was pronounced dead. He was identified by the coroner as Ciriaco Santiago Gomez of Aberdeen, Wash.

The driver of the vehicle fled the scene on foot immediately after the crash, CHP said.

Officers later arrested 26-year-old Gerardo Lopez Perez of Oaxaca, Mexico.

The investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information is asked to call CHP at 559-262-0400.
