Vehicle falls into sinkhole after water main break in downtown Fresno, authorities say

A large volume of water caused major problems in downtown Fresno Thursday night.

The Fresno Fire Department received a 911 call just before 7:30 p.m. of an unknown water problem. A fire truck arrived and saw a large volume of water across the roadway at Divisadero and Fresno Street and U Street near Community Regional Medical Center.

Fresno Fire Battalion Chief Robert Camp said road traffic was still flowing before crews witnessed a vehicle that fell into a sinkhole.

“It looks like the part of the roadway had given up due to the water flow underneath it,” Camp said.

Crews rescued the driver from the car and moved him to a safe area to make sure he wasn’t injured, Camp said.

Water was shut down and police blocked off the area.

Camp said they will assess the damage once the vehicle is out of the roadway “and get things restored.”

The area was expected to be closed for several hours.
