A 3-year-old was taken in a vehicle during a carjacking Friday night in downtown Fresno.

Police said the carjacking took place at 5:30 p.m. Friday at Mariposa and Fulton streets when the victim stepped away from his running vehicle with his child inside.

A suspect jumped in the 2016 Honda CRV and drove off and ran over the father, Fresno Police Lt. Marcus Gray said.

Officers located the vehicle at Highway 99 and Veterans Boulevard and pursuit ensued before the car was disabled at Belmont and Monroe avenues.

The found child was found safe and not injured, Gray said.

The suspect, who is in his 20s, was taken into custody.

The condition of the father is unknown and is being treated at a local hospital.
