The dorms at Fresno State were ordered to be evacuated Thursday as a threat was under investigation, according to a social media post by the school, but police said it is likely a hoax.

The school said about noon on X, formerly known as Twitter, the dorms and dining hall were to be evacuated and a subsequent message told students to gather at the Student Recreation Center.

“Fresno State Police and Fresno Police are still investigating the threat,” a tweet said. “The evacuation point has been moved to the Student Rec Center.”

The social media posts were not specific about the nature of the threat.

The threat came by email, Fresno police Lt. Bill Dooley said.

Police were treating the threat as if it was real as a precaution, but Dooley said it came from “an obscure email” and was not unlike hoaxes seen at school campuses throughout the city.

The threat was also sent to other college campuses and named specific buildings that had bombs, he said. It also included at least two names of potential victims.

Dooley said investigators were working on determining the origin of the email.
