Suspected drunk driver badly hurt in Highway 99 crash. Another motorist rescued the man
A 48-year-old man from Madera was taken to the hospital with major injuries after crashing his car late Saturday along northbound Highway 99.
The California Highway Patrol said the man was driving a Toyota Camry about 10:30 p.m. near Herndon Avenue in Fresno when he swerved from the far right lane into a center-divide wall. The impact forced the driver to swerve back to the right and off the road. where the car hit a tree.
A passing motorist saw smoke coming from the vehicle and stopped to help. He pulled the driver out just before the Camry became fully engulfed, CHP Sgt. Jason Steinhauer said.
The man was taken to Community Regional Medical Center with major injuries. Steinhauer said he will be charged with DUI.
Dry grass near a high-speed rail construction site caught fire after the crash, Steinhauer said.
