Update: 20-year-old Fresno man dies in suspected DUI solo crash on Hwy. 99 near Selma

A suspected drunken driver died Friday in a solo crash off of Highway 99 in Fresno County, the California Highway Patrol said.

The man was driving a white Kia Rio about 5 a.m. while going south on Highway 99 north of Bethel Avenue between Selma and Kingsburg before the fatal crash, officer Mike Salas confirmed.

The motorist allowed the car to veer from the fast lane across all of the southbound lanes and onto the right shoulder, CHP said.

The Kia went through a barb wire fence before rolling multiple times in a dirt field, CHP said.

As it rolled, the unrestrained driver was ejected, CHP said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

He was identified later Friday by the Fresno County Coroner’s Office as Robert Trejo, 20, of Fresno. CHP earlier in the day reported the victim was 25 years old.

Officers said they believe the driver was impaired by alcohol or drugs, or both, but noted the investigation is still preliminary.
