UPDATE: Pedestrian, 56, killed in hit-and-run ID’d by Fresno coroner. A man was arrested

A pedestrian was struck and killed Friday afternoon in a hit-and-run collision in central Fresno.

The collision happened just before 1 p.m. at Hammond and Mariposa avenues when a white truck struck a woman in her 50s who was walking on the road, Fresno Police Sgt. Diana Trueba Vega said.

The woman was taken to Community Regional Medical Center where she died.

Trueba Vega said witnesses saw the collision and followed the suspect vehicle to the Rite Aid parking lot at Blackstone and Olive avenues and called police. Officers made contact with the witness at 1:03 p.m.

A person was detained, Trueba Vega said, but it’s not “confirmed if it’s the suspect’s vehicle as the investigation unfolds.”

Hammond and Mariposa are expected to be closed for several hours.

Police are looking for additional witnesses.

It was unknown if alcohol or drugs are a factor in the collision.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 559-621-7000.
