Early-morning Fresno shootings claim two lives. Here’s what police know

Fresno police are investigating a pair of homicides that happened early Saturday about 15 minutes and two miles apart.

UPDATE: Police identify victim of homicide on Tielman

UPDATE: Victim shot to death on Fairview identified

Lt. Paul Cervantes, commander of the Fresno Police Department’s street violence bureau, said the first incident was reported at about 2:09 a.m. in the 400 block of South Tielman Avenue, south of Belmont Avenue and north of Highway 180. The scene is a short distance south of Pershing Continuation High School. The city’s ShotSpotter system, which detects gunfire sounds in various areas of the city, registered four gunshots in the area.

When officers arrived, they found the victim, a man believed to be in his 20s, on the ground in front of a home with a gunshot wound to the upper body. Police and emergency medical personnel tried to save the man, but he was declared dead at the scene.

About 15 minutes later, at 2:24 a.m., police were sent to the area of South Fairview Avenue and East Tower Avenue for seven rounds of gunfire detected by the ShotSpotter system. Cervantes said officers found a man in his 30s injured by multiple gunshot wounds near the parking lot entrance to the Hinton Community Center at the intersection of Fairview and Church avenues.

Ambulance crews declared the man dead at the scene.

No calls for service were made by residents in the area, Cervantes said; the ShotSpotter activation was the only notice that police had of the incident before they arrived.

These are the 42nd and 43rd homicides of the year for the city of Fresno.
