A pedestrian walking near Selma who was killed by an alleged drunken driver has been identified, the Fresno County Coroner’s Office said.

Daryl Bagwell, 58, of Selma was westbound on foot Friday west of Highland Avenue at around 10:30 p.m. when he was hit by a Nissan Versa, California Highway Patrol officers said.

The Nissan driver — Epigmeneo Cortez-Pedro, 57, of Selma — was headed east on Rose Avenue when he drove into the westbound lane and struck the man, according to the CHP.

Bagwell was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers said Cortez-Pedro drove away from the scene without checking on the man or calling for help. His front bumper, including the license plate, came off in the crash and was left behind.

Officers followed a fluid trail from the car and found it behind a home about a quarter mile from the crash site. They found Cortez-Pedro at his home, CHP said.

He was arrested on suspicion of felony driving under the influence, felony gross vehicular manslaughter, and felony hit and run causing great bodily injury, CHP said.
