Assault on officers leads to school lockdown in Fresno. The suspect got away, police say
Webster Elementary School in central Fresno was locked down at midday Wednesday as police searched for a man accused of assaulting two officers nearby.
Police spokesman Felipe Uribe said abut 11:50 a.m., two undercover officers were in the area of East McKenzie Avenue and North Effie Street when they noticed a man driving erratically.
They followed the driver, in a Jeep Grand Cherokee, and watched him back into a driveway near East Illinois Avenue and U Street. As they drove up, he sped from the driveway, making contact with their cars.
He then drove near the school in the 2600 block of East Tyler Avenue, where he ditched the car and ran, prompting the lockdown as multiple officers searched the area. He was not located.
The school lockdown was lifted around 1 p.m.
