Man destroys Fresno police station iron rod gate with vehicle while fleeing from officers
A man was arrested Wednesday evening after he struck an iron gate at the Fresno Police northwest station while trying to flee from officers.
Fresno Police Lt. Paul Cervantes said officers were responding to a restraining order violation at 7:45 p.m., in the 7000 block of North Fruit Avenue.
Officers didn’t initially make contact with the man in violation of the restraining order. But the victim provided officers with the suspect’s vehicle description.
Officers attempted to pull over the suspect, identified by police as Gerald Williams, in a traffic stop.
But Williams allegedly took off at a high rate of speed. Officers chased after the suspect but then called off the pursuit after noticing the man drive erratically.
Cervantes said Williams was driving in an out of neighborhoods then drove eastbound on San Jose Street towards the end of a cul de sac. There, the suspect careened through the police station’s rod iron gate and collided with two personal vehicles.
Williams wasn’t done.
He continued onto Shaw Avenue, where he drove over the center median before finally coming to a stop with the iron gate attached to the wheel.
Williams was taken into custody and is facing felony hit-and-run, felony invading and a restraining order violation.
No one was injured.
