Man who crashed into Fresno taco truck charged with murder after customer who was hit dies

The man who allegedly crashed into a Fresno taco truck and injured two customers this month has been charged with murder after one of the victims died.

The Fresno County District Attorney’s Office says it’s at least the fourth DUI offense for Rolando Alvarenga-Aguilar, 45, of Fresno in the last three years.

Authorities say Enrique Alvarenga-Aguilar was driving impaired and under the influence of alcohol on Oct. 9 when he slammed into the Tacos El Bello food truck that was set up in a parking lot near the intersection of Maple and Belmont avenues. Alvarenga-Aguilar pulled into the parking lot, lost control of his vehicle and hit two customers before fleeing the scene.

One of those hit was a 60-year-old man, who Fresno Police said was sitting at a table and eating near the taco truck.

That man, Sabas Ruiz Galaviz of Fresno, suffered severe injuries and died Monday.

Alvarenga-Aguilar eventually was found in a nearby neighborhood.

The District Attorney’s Office says that Alvarenga-Aguilar was convicted of prior driving under the influence offenses that occurred in 2018 and 2019. And he is facing charges in an additional case for DUI for a violation that occurred in 2019.

Alvarenga-Aguilar faces eight charges in all:

  • Murder
  • Gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated
  • Driving with a blood alcohol concentration in excess of .08% causing great bodily injury
  • Driving under the influence of alcohol causing great bodily injury
  • Hit and run following an injury collision
  • Hit and run following a collision causing property damage
  • Driving on a license suspended from a prior DUI conviction and causing injury
  • Driving with a blood alcohol concentration of .01% or higher while on DUI probation.

Alvarenga-Aguilar, if convicted, faces a sentence of up to 19 years to life in prison.
