Police investigating shooting near downtown Fresno after man struck by shotgun

A man was rushed into surgery after he was shot in the upper body Saturday afternoon near downtown Fresno, police said.

The Fresno Police Department’s Shotspotter alert activation picked up the shooting at 3:56 p.m., in the area of Ventura and R streets.

The man was taken to Fresno Community Regional Medical Center, where he underwent surgery and was listed in stable condition.

It is unknown what led up to the shooting and the victim did not provide officers information, Lt. Paul Cervantes said.

Cervantes added the victim was struck by a shotgun.

Officers canvassed the area but were unable to locate a weapon. The victim originally said he was shot at South Topeka and South Parallel avenues, near Ventura by the bridge.

“We were looking for evidence of blood or a shotgun because he said he was shot by a shotgun,” Cervantes said. “The wounds are consistent with a shotgun. We didn’t locate anything.”

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 559-621-7000.
