Altercation turns violent in northeast Fresno, as man dies after being shot in the head
A man was shot in the head and killed during a Saturday night altercation in northeast Fresno, triggering the city’s latest homicide investigation.
Just a day after police and other community members gathered to decry a “crisis” of shootings and killings in the city this year, officers responded to the 6700 block of North Clark Street, near Herndon and Highway 41.
Police were called about 6:15 p.m., Fresno Police Lt. Tim Tietjen said. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
The man was identified as 28-year-old Dean Gomez of Fresno.
Witnesses told police that the man was arguing with several people on the road when the altercation turned physical and shots were fired.
Police have obtained video from surveillance cameras, hoping it will show more of what led up to the shooting.
Whether the man knew any of the other people, how many shots were fired and any possible connection to gang activity are among the subjects of the investigation. The name and age of the victim also had not been determined.
Anyone with information is asked to call police at 559-621-7000.
More than 400 shootings have taken place in Fresno this year and nearly 40 have resulted in homicides, police had said at a Friday town hall at the Hinton Community Center that focused on the violence.
There were 45 willful homicides in all of 2019, according to monthly crime reports posted by the city of Fresno. Totals since 2010 have ranged from a low of 32 in 2018 to a high of 56 in 2017.
