Police probe multiple violent incidents, including death of man, in southwest Fresno

The beating death of a homeless man, and the shooting of two women, both incidents in southwest Fresno, were being investigated Wednesday by Fresno detectives.

There were no arrests or immediate identification of suspects in either incident.

Police spokesman Jeff La Blue said officers have yet to identify the man — identified Thursday by the Fresno County Coroner’s Office as Jose Martinez, 42 — and was found near a market at South Elm and West Jensen avenues.

He suffered trauma to his upper body and died at the scene, despite efforts by emergency workers. Police believe he was involved in an altercation with at least one other person.

Homicide detectives are interviewing witnesses at police headquarters.

Police were alerted to the shooting about 7 a.m., when the department’s ShotSpotter system recorded 18 rounds fired at South Lorena and West Eunice avenues.

One woman, with a gunshot wound to the leg, was rushed to a hospital. La Blue said a second woman was dropped off at the hospital with at least one gunshot wound to the upper body. She was reported in critical condition.
