Alcohol suspected in fatal Highway 41/Shaw crash, CHP says

The California Highway Patrol suspects that alcohol was a factor in a fatal crash early Tuesday on Highway 41 at Shaw Avenue in Fresno.

The 21-year-old driver of a Nissan Maxima was killed and three passengers injured in the incident that took place just after 2 a.m., a CHP spokesman reported.

The victim was identifed by the Fresno County Coroner’s Office as Alexander Rivera of Fresno.

Arriving officers found the 2005 Nissan upside down in the southbound lanes of 41, and believe that the driver lost control, veered onto an embankment and flipped the vehicle. The driver, believed to be intoxicated, was pinned in the car and succumbed to his injuries.

The CHP said that the three passengers, all 18, also believed to be intoxicated, managed to get out of the car and were taken to Community Regional Medical Center.
